“It's not so much flexible bodies that I'm after, but flexible minds” Moshe Feldenkrais
TO RUN FASTER, INCREASE FLEXIBILITY AND PREVENT INJURY, WE HAVE TO GET BACK TO BASICS
Cortical Field Re-education (CFR) was developed by 30-year Feldenkrais practitioner Harriet Goslins of Laguna Beach, California. It’s a method of working with the nervous system, through movement. We re-member ourselves, as we remember, through movement, how we taught ourselves as children to move with power and ease.
Power, ease, flexibility, free of injury: these are all things we want as Runners and Walkers. CFR is a path to gaining these in your movement with lasting results.
Our function is upgraded by the simple feedback loop which runs upon hearing an instruction, carrying it out, and noticing the sensory information received by doing it. We learn by noticing differences. During a floor lesson, you the student are inputting the sensory data for the nervous system to respond to.
CFR is about Learning How To Learn. The lessons were originally developed by observing how babies teach themselves, through constant exploration of endless trajectories of movement, how to lift a head, roll over, get to hands and knees, crawl, come to stand and eventually walk. The only way this exploration could lead to the satisfying and joyful experience of traveling on our feet was to find a way to include all of ourselves to do it: Pelvis, Sternum, Ribs, Each vertebrae of the spine from tail to head--every bone of the body.
Lessons on the floor in a group or individual format are 1 hour and 15 minutes and vary each week in their area of focus, but are similar in that they “remind” the student to allow all parts to be included.
Table lessons are private sessions where the practioner is inputting the sensory information for your nervous system to respond to, while you, the student, are allowing yourself to be moved.
